Persistent mould in Dubai bathroom — what causes it and how to fix it properly?

There's mould growing on the ceiling and walls of my Dubai bathroom. I've tried spraying it with bleach but it keeps coming back within weeks. What causes persistent mould in Dubai bathrooms and how do you treat it properly?

Persistent mould in Dubai bathrooms is almost always caused by one of three things: inadequate ventilation (the extractor fan not working properly or insufficient airflow), a water leak behind the wall causing constant moisture in the substrate, or condensation from extreme temperature differences between the cold AC and warm humid air. Bleach spraying only kills surface mould — if the spores are embedded in porous grout or silicone sealant, they will return within weeks. The proper fix depends on the cause. Step 1: check your extractor fan is actually working and clearing air effectively — hold a piece of tissue paper to it. If it barely moves, the fan needs servicing or replacing. Step 2: inspect the silicone sealant around the bath/shower — if it's discoloured or peeling, it needs to be removed and replaced entirely. Surface cleaning won't fix mouldy sealant. Step 3: if the mould persists after fixing ventilation and replacing sealant, there may be a water leak in the wall that requires a plumber. Mould treatment cost in Dubai: AED 200–AED 500 for a professional anti-mould treatment and sealant replacement.
