My toilet keeps running in Dubai — handyman or plumber and how much will it cost?

The toilet in my Dubai apartment keeps running — the cistern fills up and then keeps trickling water constantly. My DEWA bill has gone up. Is this something a handyman can fix or do I need a plumber, and roughly how much should it cost?

A constantly running toilet is one of the most common and easily fixable plumbing issues in Dubai — and yes, it can add AED 50–AED 150 to your monthly DEWA water bill if left unfixed. The cause is almost always one of three things: A faulty flapper valve (the rubber seal at the bottom of the cistern that stops water flowing into the bowl). A faulty fill valve (the mechanism that controls how high the water fills in the cistern). The float being set too high, causing water to run into the overflow tube. A handyman can fix this — you don't need a plumber. The parts cost AED 20–50 from any hardware store in Dubai (ACE Hardware, Hmart, or local hardware shops). Labour for a handyman: AED 80–AED 150 for the visit and fix. If you're renting: the toilet is part of the property's fixtures and fittings — report it to your landlord in writing. They're responsible for fixing it. If it's a Dubai apartment, running toilets often cause issues for the neighbour below if there's any overflow, so don't delay. A handyman can typically fix a running toilet in under an hour in a single visit.
