How do I know if artificial grass is suitable for my Dubai villa garden?
We have a Dubai villa garden and we're thinking about replacing the natural grass with artificial grass. How do we know if it's actually suitable for our space, and are there any factors specific to Dubai we should consider before going ahead?

Artificial grass is an excellent choice for most Dubai villa gardens, but there are a few factors to check before committing. First, consider the surface underneath. Artificial grass can be laid on compacted sand, concrete, or decking — all common in Dubai villas — but the base needs to be level, well-draining, and free of sharp debris. Poor drainage underneath can cause waterlogging during rain and unpleasant odours over time.
Second, think about sun exposure. In Dubai's climate, artificial grass in full direct sun can reach surface temperatures of 60–75°C in summer, making it uncomfortable or unusable for barefoot use and pets during the hottest months. Shaded areas or north-facing gardens fare much better. Opt for grass with a light-coloured infill or a cooling infill product if your garden gets full sun.
Third, check your HOA or community guidelines. Some Dubai communities — particularly those managed by Emaar or Nakheel — have restrictions on garden modifications, and some require NOC approval before installation.
The quality of artificial grass varies enormously. Better quality products (typically 30–40mm pile height with UV-stabilised fibres) last 8–12 years in the UAE climate. Budget options can fade, flatten, and smell within 2–3 years. Get quotes from multiple suppliers and always ask to see a sample in sunlight before committing.
