How do I set up DEWA in a new Dubai apartment?
I'm about to move into a new apartment in Dubai. What's the process for setting up DEWA electricity and water? How long does it take, how much does it cost, and what documents do I need?

Setting up DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) for a new Dubai apartment is straightforward. Here's the complete process:
Documents you need: valid Emirates ID (and passport copy for expats), your Ejari-registered tenancy contract, and the DEWA premises number for the property (your landlord or building management can provide this).
How to apply: online via the DEWA website (dewa.gov.ae) or the DEWA app, or in person at a DEWA customer happiness centre. The online process is fast and most activations are processed within 24 hours.
Costs: security deposit of AED 2,000 for an apartment (refundable when you disconnect and move out), plus a connection fee of AED 110 for electricity and AED 110 for water. Total upfront: approximately AED 2,220.
Important: ensure your landlord has properly disconnected DEWA from their name before you apply — otherwise you may inherit any outstanding balance. Ask them to confirm disconnection in writing before you proceed.
Timeline: standard residential connections are typically activated within 1 working day of application approval. Apply at least 2-3 days before your move-in date to be safe.
