How do I keep my Dubai villa pool safe for young children?

Pool safety for young children in Dubai requires layered protection. No single measure is sufficient on its own.

Pool fencing is the single most effective safety measure. Aim for a fence at least 1.2 metres high with vertical bars no more than 10 centimetres apart. The gate must be self-closing and self-latching, opening away from the pool. Glass pool fencing is popular in Dubai for aesthetics but must be frameless or semi-frameless tempered glass with compliant gate hardware.

Pool safety nets provide an excellent additional or alternative layer. Heavy-duty nets are stretched across the pool surface, supported by anchors around the edge. A quality safety net supports the weight of a child who falls on it. They remove cleanly for swimming and are almost invisible from inside the house. Very popular in Dubai villas.

Motorised pool covers can add another layer but should never be relied on as a standalone safety measure. Children can become trapped under automatic covers.

Pool perimeter alarms alert you when the fence gate is opened. Wrist alarms that trigger when a child enters water are also available and add a further layer for very young children.

Supervision rules are non-negotiable regardless of what barriers you install. Establish no exceptions: no child in the pool area without an adult present, no running, no swimming alone.

Have barriers professionally installed and checked. A gate that does not latch correctly in an emergency provides false security.
