My carpet has a bad smell in my Dubai apartment — can professional cleaning fix it?

Yes — in the majority of cases, professional cleaning can eliminate or significantly reduce carpet odours, and it is usually the most cost-effective solution before considering replacement.

The most common causes of bad carpet smell in Dubai apartments are: trapped moisture from spills that weren't fully dried, allowing mould or mildew to develop in the fibres or underlay; pet odours; food and drink residue that has fermented; and general dust and humidity buildup that creates a musty baseline smell.

Professional hot water extraction (steam cleaning) is the most effective method for odour removal — the high temperature kills bacteria and mould spores, and the extraction removes the debris and contaminants causing the smell rather than simply masking them. For persistent pet or organic odours, reputable companies also apply enzymatic treatments that break down odour-causing compounds at a molecular level.

If the smell has penetrated the underlay beneath the carpet, cleaning the carpet surface alone may not fully resolve it — in severe cases the underlay may need to be replaced. A good technician will assess this during the visit and advise accordingly.

Results are usually immediate and noticeable. The carpet needs adequate drying time after cleaning — typically 4–8 hours depending on ventilation and humidity. Keep AC running and windows open if possible to accelerate drying and prevent new moisture from being trapped.

Carpet cleaning in Dubai for a standard room runs AED 80–200 depending on size and condition. Whole-apartment packages for multiple rooms are typically more economical.
