Can I install a smart lock on my Dubai apartment door and which brands are best?

You can install a smart lock in a Dubai apartment — it's considered a non-structural modification as it replaces the lock cylinder without affecting the door frame or structure. However, there are two things to confirm first: Building management: Some Dubai buildings have specific requirements about lock types, particularly buildings with master key systems. Check with your building admin before ordering. Your tenancy contract: If it specifies 'no alterations', a lock replacement could technically fall under this — though most landlords don't object to security upgrades. A WhatsApp to your landlord confirming it's a smart lock replacement (not structural) usually gets a quick yes. Best smart lock brands for Dubai: August Smart Lock — retrofits behind your existing deadbolt, so the external appearance doesn't change. Works with Apple Home, Google, and Alexa. Good for rentals as it doesn't replace the visible lock face. Yale Assure series — popular in Dubai, good build quality for the climate, available locally. Schlage Encode — robust, weatherproof, good for front doors exposed to sun and dust. Avoid: cheap no-brand locks from Amazon — Dubai's heat and humidity kill the electronics in lesser products quickly. Budget AED 400–AED 1,200 for a quality smart lock.
